US Secretary of State John Kerry visited Baghdad April 8, 2016 to back Iraq’s government as it battl jihadis, struggles with a financial crisis and attempts carry out reforms.
Kerry met Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi an Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari and had talks wi Nachirvan Barzani, the Prime Minister of Iraq’s aut nomous Kurdish region.
State Department spokesman said Kerry used t’ meetings to “underscore our strong support for the Ira government as it addresses significant security, econom and political challenges.”
Mr. Kerry on his first visit to Iraq since 2014 di cussed US-led support for Baghdad’s efforts to battle Islamic State Jihadist group.
The coalition was carrying out airstrikes against and was also providing training and arms to Iraqi forces.
“This is obviously a very critical time here in Iraq an we have been working on a lot of different issues in t last year”, Kerry told reporters after meeting Jaafari.
